CHAPTER 12 - IDEAS FOR DESIGNING A FUNCTIONAL, THREE DIMENSIONAL, EMBROIDERED ITEM

Making three dimensional shapes has brought back memories of my years as a primary school teacher when I made many such shapes with my classes. So I decided to try some more unusual shapes as well as a 'classic' one.

Stage 1
12a- pattern for a diamond shape

-diamond in Vilene pinned

-sewn together showing inside
-upside down

12b- a clam shell shape pattern

-clam shell in Vilene pinned together

-inside after stitching

-outside of finished clam shell, this would make an unusual bag when enlarged

12c-  pattern arrangement for a classic cube shape. I made this from fabric samples stitched in an earlier chapter

 - three views of the finished cube, I like this little box, I can use it or storage!

12c- envelope/pouch shape made in calico, the following images show the making sequence. This design could be translated into a  decorated clutch handbag

12d- rectangular cuboid shape folded and stitched from a stitched and decorated fabric sample made in Chapter 11

Rectangular sample

- sample folded with the sides stitched

- seams pressed open and bottom corner pinned across to form base

- side view of rectangular bag

-front view

I like this sample and will line it and add handles. I think I will develop this 3d sample in the next section.

Stage 2
Three design ideas to develop.

I am not sure how to make a 3d sample of my next idea but I would like to make a tunic/vest in patchwork with decorated blocks. I hope to include tonal changes and animal inspired prints/embellishments in the designs for the individual blocks. A basic pattern for the tunic is shown below.

12e - first idea, the following images include my sample that is the  inspiration for the decorated blocks in the tunic, several printed and decorated example blocks together with stitch ideas and lastly the blocks pinned together in a possible combination for the back and front of the tunic. The fabric is an off white linen. Snake skin patterns were an influence.

12f- second idea, the following images are the development of the small bag design from the first section, I have deviated from black/white and dyed cotton fabric in' big cat skin' inspired colours.  The squares and rectangles have been printed, stitched, and quilted to wadding to give a textured surface/feel.

12g- third idea, I would like to make a funky waistcoat in my purchased black and white fabrics. I liked the tonal effect these fabrics gave in my sample from Chapter 11 but the prints were too stylised. I hope to change this with surface stitching and decoration. I have made a cotton fabric toile from a blouse pattern and will use this as the base for the design.
The following images show the toile and a section of the background patchwork for the waistcoat. Further stitching and embellishments  will be added.
